New fabrics - new ideas

I went to a Sewing Expo on Friday. Just want to share some of the delicious fabrics I picked up there. My plan lately has been to find fabrics for Delilah that aren't pink, but still girly. I like pink, but with a little girl, it's EVERYWHERE!

First, these chickens were hiding in the http://www.someartfabric.com/ booth. They wanted to come home with me.

The chickens lead me to these Kokka fabrics from Japan. They had to come home with me too. They were practically begging. Can you see, on the right, that's Alice in Wonderland baby!!! Swoon.

Later, the clearance booth from the same someartfabric people sucked me in but look at the two bargain yards of fabric I got there! A gorgeous lilac hawaiian style print. The picture doesn't do the beautiful colors justice.

And some cute doggies. My munchkin loves dogs, so I had to pick this up. Bow wow.

Last, but not least, I forget the name of the vendor, but here is my bargain of the day. I fished this out of the clearance bin with a big smile on my face. The woman working for the vendor IMMEDIATELY says, "That's not supposed to be in there, that's not clearance." I must have looked pretty forlorn because she took another look, saw the roll of fabric was quite thin and said, "Oh, you can have it then, there's not much left." Wheeee! Turns out there was just over 2 yards left and I got them both for $4! Was supposed to be $13 a yard. SCORE!

Now what to do with them? I think since I love the lazy days skirt pattern so much by Oliver and S, I will try the Popover Dress by them too. Fingers crossed~

Hairclip Frame and a sortof tutorial

I'm back! Remember that pretty birdy fabric I showed you?
This:

I made something with it! A hair bow holder for my sweet little girl. No sewing!
I put it together using a frame from IKEA that I already had, a piece of batting, some ribbon I picked up at Michaels, the pretty birdy fabric and some tape. Yep, tape. No sewing or stapling on this one.

A few pics:

Here is how I did it.

I took out the wood backing from the frame, and using that as my guide, cut a piece of batting that was about an inch larger on all sides.
Then I got out my trusty roll of packing tape (I was nervous about it holding. But it was great! I taped batting to the frame, pulling it a bit tight.
I then repeated the process with the birdy fabric and more tape. I've seen other tutorials with this done with staples, which sounds sturdier. But the tape seems to be holding and it was easy peasy.

I then cut three pieces of ribbon about an inch and half longer than the frame, and taped them the same way. I put the fabric covered wood in the frame, then put the glass in behind it. And then I broke the glass. :-(

Good thing it was glass and not a mirror, I don't need any bad luck.

So, the glass was ditched. I put the mat to the frame in the back, and secured it with the little hanger doohickeys (what do they call them?) that hold the frame in place.

Ta Dah!

Too bad you really can't see the birds very well behind the hairclips!

I used a RIBBA frame from IKEA, and it's not very big, so I think I will make another to hang with it as a little set.

And now I must make some pretty hairclips!

Birdy Fabric

When I picked up my new fancy sewing machine, before L lost his mind of boredom being in a sewing store and Delilah broke something, I managed a quick peek at the fabrics they were selling and managed to grab a pretty precut yard of this stuff:

I have no idea what I'm going to do with it, I just saw it and couldn't resist those little birdies. And now I am DYING to go back to the sewing store and see what other irresistable cuties are sitting in that precut bin.
Thank you to the people at Discover Sewing - the fabulous dealer where I bought my machine and this yard of delicious cuteness. They were awesome in explaining my machine, and I know I'll be back with more questions, and, to buy more fabric.

Now what will do with my birdies?!?!
